A projectile is launched at an angle 'α' with the horizontal with a velocity 20 ms−1. After 10 s, its inclination with horizontal is 'β'. The value of tanβ will be : (g = 10 ms−2).

Multiple Choice Options

  • A tanα + 5secα
  • B tanα − 5secα
  • C 2tanα − 5secα
  • D 2tanα + 5secα

Step-by-Step Verified Solution

At t=0t=0 , the motion of projectile is given as

JEE Main 2022 (Online) 27th June Morning Shift Physics - Motion in a Plane Question 42 English Explanation 1

tan⁡α=uyux\tan \alpha=\frac{u_{y}}{u_{x}}

where, uyu_{y} is the vertical component of initial velocity and uxu_{x} is the horizontal component of initial velocity.

At t=10 st=10 \mathrm{~s} , the motion of projectile is given as

JEE Main 2022 (Online) 27th June Morning Shift Physics - Motion in a Plane Question 42 English Explanation 2

tan⁡β=vyvx\tan \beta=\frac{v_{y}}{v_{x}} .........(ii)

where, vyv_{y} is the vertical component of final velocity after t=10 st=10 \mathrm{~s} and vxv_{x} is the horizontal component of final velocity.

From Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get tan⁡βtan⁡α=vyuy(\frac{\tan \beta}{\tan \alpha}=\frac{v_y}{u_y} \quad\left(\right. as vx=uxv_x=u_x ) ....(iii)

Using the following equation in vertical direction, we get

vy=uy−gtvy=uy−100

Using Eq, (iii)}

tan⁡βtan⁡α=uy−100uy

tan⁡βtan⁡α=1−100uy=1−10020sin⁡α(∵uy=20sin⁡α)

=1−5sin⁡α

⇒tan⁡β=tan⁡α(1−5sin⁡α)=tan⁡α−5sec⁡α\Rightarrow \tan \beta=\tan \alpha\left(1-\frac{5}{\sin \alpha}\right)=\tan \alpha-5 \sec \alpha
