Two particles are performing simple harmonic motion in a straight line about the same equilibrium point. The amplitude and time period for both particles are same and equal to A and I, respectively. At time t = 0 one particle has displacement A while the other one has displacement −A2{{ - A} \over 2} and they are moving towards each other. If they cross each other at time t, then t is :

Multiple Choice Options

  • B 5T6{5T \over 6}
  • C T3{T \over 3}
  • D T4{T \over 4}

Step-by-Step Verified Solution

JEE Main 2016 (Online) 9th April Morning Slot Physics - Simple Harmonic Motion Question 120 English Explanation
Angular displacement ( θ\theta 1) of particle 1. from equilibrium,

y1{y_1} = A sin θ\theta 1

⇒\Rightarrow    A = Asin θ\theta 1

⇒\Rightarrow    sin θ\theta 1 = 1 = sin π2{\pi \over 2}

∴\therefore     θ\theta 1 = π2{\pi \over 2}

Similarly for particle 2 angular displacement θ\theta 2 from equilibrium,

y2 = Asin θ\theta 2

⇒\Rightarrow     −- A2{A \over 2} = Asin θ\theta 2

⇒\Rightarrow    sin θ\theta 2 = −- 12{1 \over 2} = sin (−π3)\left( { - {\pi \over 3}} \right)

⇒\Rightarrow     θ\theta 2 = −- π3{{\pi \over 3}}

Relative angular displacement of the two particle,

θ\theta = θ\theta 1 −- θ\theta 2

= π2{{\pi \over 2}} −- (−π6)\left( { - {\pi \over 6}} \right)

= 2π3{{{2\pi } \over 3}}

Relative angular velocity == ω−(−ω)\omega - \left( { - \omega } \right) = 2ω2\omega

If they cross each other at time t

then,   t = θ2ω{\theta \over {2\omega }} = 2π3×2ω{{2\pi } \over {3 \times 2\omega }} = π3×2πT{\pi \over {3 \times {{2\pi } \over T}}} = T6{T \over 6}
