Step-by-Step Verified Solution

Let the roots of equation x2−6x+a=0{x^2} - 6x + a = 0 be α\alpha

and 44 β\beta and that of the equation

x2−cx+6=0{x^2} - cx + 6 = 0 be α\alpha and 3β.3\beta . Then

                       α+4β=6;       4αβ=a\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\alpha + 4\beta = 6;\,\,\,\,\,\,\,4\alpha \beta = a

and              α+3β=c;       3αβ=6\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\alpha + 3\beta = c;\,\,\,\,\,\,\,3\alpha \beta = 6

⇒               a=8\Rightarrow \,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,a = 8

∴\therefore The equation becomes

x2−6x+8=0{x^2} - 6x + 8 = 0

⇒(x−2)(x−4)=0\Rightarrow \left( {x - 2} \right)\left( {x - 4} \right) = 0

⇒\Rightarrow roots are 22 and 44

⇒α=2,β=1\Rightarrow \alpha = 2,\beta = 1

∴\therefore Common root is 2.2.
