A ring and disc are initially at rest, side by side, at the top of an inclined plane which makes an angle 60∘{60^ \circ } with the horizontal. They start to roll without slipping at the same instant of time along the shortest path. If the time difference between their reaching the ground is (2−3)/10  s,\left( {2 - \sqrt 3 } \right)/\sqrt {10} \,\,s, then the height of the top of the inclined plane, in metres is ______________ . Take g=10  ms−2.g = 10\,\,m{s^{ - 2}}.

JEE Advanced 2018 Paper 1 Offline Physics - Rotational Motion Question 45 English Explanation

Given, h = height of the top of inclined plane = ?, θ\theta = 60 ∘^\circ , g = 10 m s −- 2 and time difference between ring and disc reaching ground = 2−310{{2 - \sqrt 3 } \over {\sqrt {10} }} s

We know that, a=gsin⁡θ1+IMR2a = {{g\sin \theta } \over {1 + {I \over {M{R^2}}}}}

For ring, I=MR2I = M{R^2} and for disc I=32MR2I = {3 \over 2}M{R^2} .

So, aring=gsin⁡θ2{a_{ring}} = {{g\sin \theta } \over 2} and adisk=2gsin⁡θ3{a_{disk}} = {{2g\sin \theta } \over 3}

Now using s=12at2s = {1 \over 2}a{t^2}

sring=12(gsin⁡θ2)t12⇒hsin⁡θ=12(gsin⁡θ2)t12{s_{ring}} = {1 \over 2}\left( {{{g\sin \theta } \over 2}} \right)t_1^2 \Rightarrow {h \over {\sin \theta }} = {1 \over 2}\left( {{{g\sin \theta } \over 2}} \right)t_1^2 ...... (1)

sdisk=12(2gsin⁡θ3)t22⇒hsin⁡θ=12(2gsin⁡θ3)t22{s_{disk}} = {1 \over 2}\left( {{{2g\sin \theta } \over 3}} \right)t_2^2 \Rightarrow {h \over {\sin \theta }} = {1 \over 2}\left( {{{2g\sin \theta } \over 3}} \right)t_2^2 ...... (2)

Given, t1−t2=2−310{t_1} - {t_2} = {{2 - \sqrt 3 } \over {\sqrt {10} }}

From Eq. (1), we have t1=4hgsin⁡2θ{t_1} = \sqrt {{{4h} \over {g{{\sin }^2}\theta }}}

and from Eq. (2), we have t2=3hgsin⁡2θ{t_2} = \sqrt {{{3h} \over {g{{\sin }^2}\theta }}}

So, 4hgsin⁡2θ−3hgsin⁡2θ=2−310\sqrt {{{4h} \over {g{{\sin }^2}\theta }}} - \sqrt {{{3h} \over {g{{\sin }^2}\theta }}} = {{2 - \sqrt 3 } \over {\sqrt {10} }}

⇒4h10sin⁡260∘−3h10sin⁡260∘=2−310\Rightarrow \sqrt {{{4h} \over {10{{\sin }^2}60^\circ }}} - \sqrt {{{3h} \over {10{{\sin }^2}60^\circ }}} = {{2 - \sqrt 3 } \over {\sqrt {10} }}

⇒16h3×10−4h10=2−310\Rightarrow \sqrt {{{16h} \over {3 \times 10}}} - \sqrt {{{4h} \over {10}}} = {{2 - \sqrt 3 } \over {\sqrt {10} }}

⇒4h3−2h=2−3\Rightarrow {{4\sqrt h } \over {\sqrt 3 }} - 2\sqrt h = 2 - \sqrt 3

⇒h(43−2)=(2−3)\Rightarrow \sqrt h \left( {{4 \over {\sqrt 3 }} - 2} \right) = (2 - \sqrt 3 )

⇒h(4−23)3=(2−3)\Rightarrow \sqrt h {{(4 - 2\sqrt 3 )} \over {\sqrt 3 }} = (2 - \sqrt 3 )

⇒h×23(2−3)=(2−3)⇒h=32\Rightarrow \sqrt h \times {2 \over {\sqrt 3 }}(2 - \sqrt 3 ) = (2 - \sqrt 3 ) \Rightarrow \sqrt h = {{\sqrt 3 } \over 2}

⇒h=34=0.75\Rightarrow h = {3 \over 4} = 0.75 m
