In R3,{R^3}, let LL be a straight lines passing through the origin. Suppose that all the points on LL are at a constant distance from the two planes P1:x+2y−z+1=0{P_1}:x + 2y - z + 1 = 0 and P2:2x−y+z−1=0.{P_2}:2x - y + z - 1 = 0. Let MM be the locus of the feet of the perpendiculars drawn from the points on LL to the plane P1.{P_1}. Which of the following points lie (s) on MM ?

Multiple Choice Options

  • A (0,−56,−23)\left( {0, - {5 \over 6}, - {2 \over 3}} \right)
  • B (−16,−13,16)\left( { - {1 \over 6}, - {1 \over 3},{1 \over 6}} \right)
  • C (−56,0,16)\left( { - {5 \over 6},0,{1 \over 6}} \right)
  • D (−13,0,23)\left( { - {1 \over 3},0,{2 \over 3}} \right)

Step-by-Step Verified Solution

Let the equation of the line passing through the origin be L:xl=ym=zn... (i)\mathrm{L}: \frac{x}{l}=\frac{y}{m}=\frac{z}{n}\quad \text{... (i)}

Given, planes

amp;P1:x+2y−z+1=0... (ii)amp;P2:2x−y+z−1=0... (iii)\begin{aligned}& \mathrm{P}_1: x+2 y-z+1=0 \quad \text{... (ii)}\\& \mathrm{P}_2: 2 x-y+z-1=0 \quad \text{... (iii)}\end{aligned}

since, all the points on L\mathrm{L} are at a constant distance from the planes P1\mathrm{P}_1 and P2\mathrm{P}_2

∴\therefore Line L\mathrm{L} is perpendicular to normal of plane P1\mathrm{P}_1 and P2\mathrm{P}_2

As we know if two lines are perpendicular then the sum of products of their respective direction ratios is zero.

amp;⇒l+2m−n=0……. (iv) {∵L⊥P1}amp;⇒2l−m+n=0……. (v) {∵L⊥P2}\begin{aligned}& \Rightarrow l+2 m-n=0 \ldots \ldots . \text { (iv) } \quad \left\{\because L \perp P_1\right\}\\& \Rightarrow 2 l-m+n=0 \ldots \ldots . \text { (v) } \quad \left\{\because L \perp P_2\right\}\end{aligned}

On solving equation (iv) and equation (v), we get

l1=m−3=n−5\frac{l}{1}=\frac{m}{-3}=\frac{n}{-5}

∴\therefore \quad Equation of line L is x1=y−3=z−5\frac{x}{1}=\frac{y}{-3}=\frac{z}{-5}

Let any point on L is A(k,−3k,−5k)\mathrm{A}(k,-3 k,-5 k)

Now foot of perpendicular from AA to plane P1P_1 is given by

amp;x−k1=y+3k2=z+5k−1=−(k−6k+5k+1)12+22+12⇒amp;x−k1=y+3k2=z+5k−1=−16⇒amp;x=k−16,y=−3k−13,z=−5k+16\begin{aligned}& \frac{x-k}{1}=\frac{y+3 k}{2}=\frac{z+5 k}{-1}=-\frac{(k-6 k+5 k+1)}{1^2+2^2+1^2} \\\Rightarrow \quad & \frac{x-k}{1}=\frac{y+3 k}{2}=\frac{z+5 k}{-1}=-\frac{1}{6} \\\Rightarrow \quad & x=k-\frac{1}{6}, y=-3 k-\frac{1}{3}, z=-5 k+\frac{1}{6}\end{aligned}

So, coordinates of foot of perpendicular is (k−16,−3k−13,−5k+16)\left(k-\frac{1}{6},-3 k-\frac{1}{3},-5 k+\frac{1}{6}\right)

For k=0k=0 , foot of perpendicular (−16,−13,16)\left(-\frac{1}{6},-\frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{6}\right)

For k=16k=\frac{1}{6} , foot of perpendicular (0,−56,−23)\left(0,-\frac{5}{6},-\frac{2}{3}\right)

Hint :

(i) since all points on L are at constant distance from the planes P1\mathrm{P}_1 and P2\mathrm{P}_2 . So line LL is perpendicular to normal of P1P_1 and P2P_2 .

(ii) Find equation of line L using above condition and assume any point on L .

(iii) Use coordinates of foot of perpendicular drawn from a point (x1y1z1)\left(x_1 y_1 z_1\right) to the plane ax+by+cz+d=0a x+b y+c z+d=0 is given by

x−x1a=y−y1b=z−z1c=−ax1+by1+cz1+da2+b2+c2\frac{x-x_1}{a}=\frac{y-y_1}{b}=\frac{z-z_1}{c}=-\frac{a x_1+b y_1+c z_1+d}{a^2+b^2+c^2}
